Serving the Underprivileged: Making Music Accessible to All
Renita Luehrman began playing the violin at the age of 4, and little did she know that would be the beginning of a long and beautiful journey. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where she studied with members of the Arianna String Quartet, she went on to study Suzuki Pedagogy with Vera McCoy-Sulentic while obtaining a master’s degree from Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville. Actively teaching in under-resourced areas of St. Louis since 2004 has given her a perspective and passion for building community through accessible music lessons. This passion led to the founding of Suzuki Harmony STL, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Suzuki Harmony provides private and group music instruction for students at reduced rates so that every child is able to access high-quality music instruction, no matter their ability to pay. Every child can, but do they have the opportunity?
While not teaching and running Suzuki Harmony STL, Renita enjoys drinking coffee, reading, hiking and spending time with her husband and two sons.
